KNOW YOUR COCKTAILS Copyright (c) 1993,94 by David Berghouse All Rights Reserved PROGRAM INFORMATION INTRODUCTION This software will assist in enabling you to master the art of cocktail making. It is important to remember that there is no substitute for the experienced gained from actually making Cocktails. However, "Cocktail" will assist in helping you learn what is in many of the cocktails and will also provide you with a fun trivia quiz program to reinforce this knowledge. You will also find "Cocktail" useful for future reference - when you forget how to make that not so frequently asked for cocktail. If you are working in the industry, you may find it helpful to install "Cocktail" (a registered version) on the Restaurant/Bar computer. The "Index and Glossary" module will be helpful here as the Cocktails are listed in alphabetical order. We are always interested in hearing about new or unusual cocktails. If you (as a registered user) send us genuine details of ten drinkable cocktails not included in your registered version (our decision on the validity of these will be final), you will qualify for a free copy of the next upgrade. Send full details to David Berghouse, P.O. Box 8194, Gold Coast Mail Centre 4217, Australia. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS This software is designed to run on IBM and compatible computers with DOS version 3.0 or later. It will operate from floppy disk, but will be smoother and faster from hard disk. While configured for colour monitors, it will operate well using monochrome monitors. Note that on some monochrome monitors the active button (CONTINUE, QUIT etc.) may appear to be the button that is not highlighted. The program can be controlled by both the keyboard and mouse. INSTALLING THE PROGRAM 1. Put the Installation Disk in drive A: or B:. 2. From a DOS command line enter "x:INSTALL" (where x is the name of the drive with the Installation Disk). 3. Press "I" to begin installation. When requested, enter the drive and/or directory to install the program to, or just press to accept the default. 4. Press "X" to exit from the Install utility, and then enter "COCKTAIL" to run the program. The program can also be run from within the Install utility by pressing "R". RUNNING THE PROGRAM When you first start the program you will notice you pass through the title screen and there will be some hypertext buttons marked LICENSE, REGISTRATION and COPYRIGHT - be sure to check the contents of these by moving the highlight onto these button and clicking or pressing enter. After the title screens you are presented with the Main Menu where the different learning modules are listed. Again simply highlight the module that you wish to look through and click with the left button of the mouse or press enter. If the modules are numbered it is suggested that you proceed in the order of that numbering, otherwise choose any module that interests you. OPERATION The program is very simple to "drive" - it's structured around the use of control buttons, most of which are located at the bottom of the screen. You highlight these buttons by using either the mouse or the arrow keys. Then either click on the left mouse button or press enter. Other areas of control on the screen from time to time are "Hypertext" buttons. You will notice that the highlight can be moved off the bottom line control buttons up to the screen area and onto any of these hypertext buttons. Clicking with the left mouse button or pressing enter will activate that button giving you the information relating to that button. If at any point in the program you wish to back-track and look at a previous screen, move the highlight on the bottom line of the screen across to PAGEBACK and click on the mouse left button or press enter. This will take you back one screen. If you wish to go back more than one screen make sure to move the highlight button again across to PAGEBACK, as the default position for the highlight bar is on CONTINUE button. When you are working through a module should you wish to exit that module, move the highlight bar across to the QUIT button and click on the mouse left button or press enter - and that will take you back to the Main Menu. At any time you require help when you are working through a module move the highlight bar on the bottom line of the screen across to the HELP button and click on the mouse left button or press enter. You will then be presented with the Help Menu. Choose the aspect of help required by moving the highlight bar with the mouse or arrow keys and then clicking with the left mouse button or pressing enter. QUIZZES The trivia quizzes are of multiple choice type and are presented on the screen with the question above the possible multiple choice answers. The answers are indicated by capital alphabet letters (A, B, C, etc.) with one being highlighted. The highlight can be moved with either the mouse or the arrow keys. When you have made your choice, click with the left mouse button or press enter. At the completion of each quiz (maximum of 10 questions) you are presented with your score in graph form. The quizzes are divided into two broad grades: a) Basic. These quizzes are grouped into sections based on the base spirit of the cocktail. So, all the Gin based cocktails are in one section and all the Whisky based cocktails are in another section. There are hints to help with the right answer, and you are given two chances to make the right choice out of three possibilities. b) Advanced. These quizzes are not grouped in any particular manner - you are questioned on any cocktail, regardless of base spirit. There are no hints to assist you in making the right choice, and you are given only one chance to make the right choice from five possibilities.
